Filtration

As axolotls have a higher bio load than some aquatics, it’s important to have a good filter. It’s recommended to have 2-4x the gallons of your tank. So if you have a 40-gallon, that would be 80 or 160 gallons!

There are many options for filters, you’ll have to decide the best option for you and your pet.

Canisters allow you to hook up a chiller directly to it so you don’t need to worry about getting anything extra, but it can be a bit pricier.

Sponge filters are great for bacteria and filtration, but they can’t be hooked up directly to a chiller.

HOB (hang on back) filters can be good space savers, just make sure they don’t require replacing your media every few months, and you can’t hook up a chiller to these either.

Anything with replacement cartridges isn’t recommended as you will be destroying all your established bacteria and crashing your cycle, which we’ll discuss later in this guide.
