Substrate

Having something on the bottom of your Axolotl tank can be a great design choice and help customize your aquarium! There are some things to remember as you’re doing so though.

Sand substrates can only be used if your Axolotl is 6 inches or longer, as any sand can’t pass through their digestive tract until that size at least. If opting for sand you also must ensure it’s under 1mm grain size, as this can be difficult or impossible to pass for your axolotl, which can be deadly. Absolutely no gravel under any circumstances!

Bare bottom is easy to clean and convenient, the only downside is the lack of something for your axolotl to grip, but if the flow is low in your tank, this shouldn't be an issue.

Untreated tiles can be siliconed to the bottom of your tank if you dislike bare bottom!

Currently, safe sands include:

Crayola play sand

JBL Sansibar DARK sand

Caribsea Supernaturals

Exo Terra Riverbed Sand

And pool sand under 1mm.

It’s important to wash your sand before putting it in your aquarium, this ensures you won’t have a super cloudy tank!
